Sofía Torres Durán

Cellist

Sofía Torres Durán is defined as "a self-confident and risk-taking playing as well as a powerful, grounded sound that makes the young Andalusian one of the most exciting cellists of her generation" by the Styriarte Festival.

Highlights of the 2024/25 season include her solo debut as part of the Mozartwoche with the Mozarteum Academic Symphony Orchestra in the Golden Hall of the Stiftung Mozarteum in Salzburg as well as concerts with the Philharmony Salzburg performing Antonin Dvorak's Cello Concerto. During her career as a soloist, she has worked with renowned conductors such as Manuel Hernández-Silva, Domingo Hindoyan, Pablo González, Lucía Marín, Elim Chan and others. In 2023 she had the opportunity to participate in the 'World Orchestra for Peace' under the direction of Sir Karl Jenkins and the premiere of "One World".

The Egon Trio, founded in 2023, stands out from her numerous chamber music activities.

The Egon Trio was selected to take part in the 72nd ARD International Music Competition in Munich. Since October 2024, the trio has been studying with Prof. Dirk Mommertz at the HMTM Munich.

In addition to her career as a performer, Sofía Torres also composes and arranges music for cello solo and cello ensemble. As a member of the cello sextet CelloVersum, she had the opportunity to premiere her arrangement of "Lasst mich allein" by A. Dvorak for 6 cellos.

Sofía Torres started playing the cello at the age of five, taking music lessons from her mother from the age of three. Her studies with Álvaro Serrano and Orna Carmel in Jerez and later with Fernando Arias in Zaragoza led her to complete her bachelor's degree in 2020 and began her master's degree with Professor Matthias Bartolomey at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg in 2023. Torres has also been guided by professors such as, Heidi Litschauer, Suzanne Stefanovic, María de Macedo, Gary Hoffman, Wen-Sinn Yang, Paolo Bonomini, Reinhard Latzko, Troels Svane, Julian Steckel, among others.

Sofía was a prize winner of the Young Promises Competition of the Violoncello "Jaime Donato Benavente", the 'Soncello' Competition for Young Cellists and the Gustav Mahler Prize Cello Competition, among others. Taking her to play in concerts halls and festivals such as the Teatro Maestranza in Seville, the Sala Mozart from Auditorium Zaragoza, the MuTh in Vienna, the Festpielhaus in Salzburg, the Brucknerhaus in Linz, the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, the Styriarte Festival Graz and the Herbsttöne Festival.

Sofía plays a "canon paganini" style cello by luthier Urs W. Mächler built in 2018.
